Notes on the painting:

About a year ago I saw a movie that had Julie Christie in it. She played the part of a woman who had Alzheimer's. At one point in the movie she said that she felt that she was disappearing and when I finished making this water landscape painting that phrase came back to me.

Notes on the painting:

I know that I had been looking at clouds and pictures of the swirling gases around the planets right before I made this painting. I was also looking at this picture I had found, that I had filed under Ocean, with a barge in it and mountains behind it. In any case the water and clouds and gases and the mountains appeared. I remember making the clouds covering the mountains and thinking that they reminded me of mountains in a Chinese landscape painting. This was the first landscape painting where I started using the barge, which seems to continue reappearing; my stand-in.
