I started working on what I originally thought was a children’s book, but I’d now call it an “existential children’s book. I wrote and illustrated this book between 1976 and 1978. The book is about a boy who can’t have a pet, his perambulations with his family and community and how he resolves his desire. It has 17 ink drawings.
After sending “The Pet” out to many different publishing houses, it was finally accepted by a company in Holland. Just about this same time I had applied to and was accepted to graduate school. Coincidentally the Dutch publishing company went under at the same time. “The Pet” languished on the shelf until 2006. In 2006, my brother, who is an economist thought that I might like to see how many years I statistically I had to left to live, which turned out to be about 25 years. I decided that if I were ever to complete this book, that it was carpe diem.
In 2007 I started working with Peter Koch, of Peter Koch Printers, in Oakland, California, a fine art printing company, and with Don Farnsworth of Magnolia Editions, also in Oakland, California. The three of collaborated, and in the end, Jonathan Gerkin, of Peter Koch Printers, designed the text placement and I printed the book at Magnolia Editions. I then went to Pettingell Bindery where I had “The Pet” hand bound. The Pet is destined in its current form to have an edition of 25.
