Well after navigating the new Marin Open Studios website, I have finally been able to put in my information and some of my images that will be available for the spring 2022 Marin Open Studios which I will be participating in for both weekends; April 30-May 1 and May 7-8. I've started re-reading Faulkner's "The Hamlet." Faulkner has a way of bringing you right into the moment, re-awakening you to a time when people paid attention to one another's subtle ways of speaking or expressing themselves through body movements or expressions on their faces. This brought me to thinking about how things have changed so much as all over the world people are glued to their electronic devices where their interactions are revealed (like here on this blog) via a screen without the accompanying physicality of the material world. As I am working through composing paintings from early memories, those memories are imbued with sounds, smells, air, water, being. I can always remember things when they are attached to the physical world, but find that without that connection to the physical world, the memories of experience disappear.

This painting, "Under the Forsythia," is from a memory (assisted by looking at a photo of forsythias), where I spent some of my childhood seeking sanctuary. I spent many hours under various trees and bushes seeking out their protective and encompassing bodies.

I'll be teaching in person classes at through College of Marin's Community Education for both winter and spring. Sign up for classes is January 4 at 9 am.

 
Drawing Workshop
Learn to draw in this fun and informative six-week workshop in which you will be introduced to a variety of materials and learn and practice core drawing skills. This workshop will help you feel comfortable with the materials and give you tools to use for any two-dimensional work you choose. Students are encouraged to keep an ongoing notebook. Additional materials costs are approximately $150. A list will be provided by the instructor prior to the first session.

Painting Workshop
Learn how to use acrylics to structure your painting using the underpinnings of drawing, including value and color relationships, while developing your own sensibility and vocabulary with whatever subject matter you choose. You'll be asked to keep an ongoing painting notebook as a personal roadmap. The focus will be on the pleasure of the process and concentration. A materials list will be emailed by the instructor before the first class session. Some drawing experience is recommended.

I'll be having a show from December 6 through February 15 at The Tamalpais, an Independent Living Center located in Greenbrae, CA. While the show isn't open to the public, it does provide those who live there and their visitors to experience art right in their own venue. Thank you to Joan Hauck who has set up this show for me for a second time. There will be a reception depending on what the Covid 19 restrictions are made by the county of Marin and the Tamalpais. I will have 18 pieces showing.
